RSHE
Our Intent:
Harris Academy Merton is committed to delivering the DfE Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSHE) and Health Education Statutory guidance (2020) A primary concern of all staff is to ensure that every student is safe from risk while in our care; we consider the well-being, emotional and social development of our students as paramount. Effective sex and relationship education is essential for young people to make well informed decisions about their lives.
At HAM, RSHE Education is delivered through a range of programs, such as: Tutor Time RSHE sessions; Tutor time ‘Faith, Lifestyle, Inclusion, Culture, Society’ sessions (FLICS); Assemblies; RSHE drop down sessions; and the curriculum subjects of Science, Religious Studies, Food Technology, Physical Education and Computer Science. The Academy Early Help Team with the support of the DSL, also delivers bespoke safeguarding workshops to SEND students.
Our RSHE drop down sessions have the same theme as the termly RSHE themes and aim to embed knowledge contextually across year groups and bring the school community together. As such, during these drop-down sessions, students in years 7 to 13 experience further development of the three termly themes: Healthy Relationships, Health and Wellbeing and Living in the wider word. The content of these sessions also consider the current local and national safeguarding context.
Year 7 Transition:
During the first half term Year 7 students receive 2 RSHE sessions per week to support with the transition to secondary school and help students become ready, respectful and resilient members of the Academy community. Sessions will be led by the Year 7 Faculty Team and include specific safeguarding guidance on the 1. School rules and safety, 2. Safe travel to and from school 3. Using mobile phones safety, 4. Screen time, 5. social media and group chats and 6. Anti-bullying.
Assemblies and FLICS:
The whole Academy also receives aspects of RSHE via the assembly’s programme and FLICS programme are themes are coordinated to coincide with the termly RSHE themes of relationships health a well-being and the wider world.
Drop-Down Sessions:
Year 7 to 13 RSHE drop- down sessions are specifically chosen by students at the end of the previous academic year.
