Harris Merton Lion King Production; A Roaring Success!

Harris Merton Lion King Production; A Roaring Success!

Harris Academy Merton was brought to life last week, as it was transformed from a South London school hall to the great plains of Africa, for a brilliant rendition of Disney’s ‘The Lion King’. The stage simply exploded with glorious colours, superb acting ability and enchanting music as the audience were captivated by the story of Simba and experienced his epic adventure from wide eyed lion club- to his destined role of King of the Pridelands.

The students were taken to watch the ‘The Lion King’ at the Lyceum Theatre for inspiration prior to the show and seeing how the ‘professionals’ do it seemed to bring their performances up to another level entirely. Standout performances included; Cain as a particularly scary Uncle Scar, Sean a perfect fit in every way as a very self-righteous, indignant and colourful Zazu, with Aemani and Elani playing the hilarious comedy duo- warthog Timon and meerkat Pumba. Brou and Nathaniel gave particularly powerful performances as younger and older Simba, perfectly depicting the emotions and challenges of growing up and what it takes to become a true ‘lion leader’.

If the acting was brilliant, the musical performances were nothing short of outstanding, with the audience being treated to fantastic renditions of songs such as ‘I Just Can’t Wait to Be King’, ‘Hukuna Matata’ and ‘Circle Of Life’ with such oomph and zest, that at times you had to remind yourself this was a school production- with predominantly younger students as its cast!

As brilliant as the actors and actresses were, the production simply would not have been possible were it not for the hard work and dedication put in to rehearsals by the Performing Arts Team. The amazing set was a true credit to the Art department, its team of enrichment students created an array of stunning masks and the make-up skills of the D&T department (along with a variety of staff and student helpers) transformed our students into visions of beauty- which simply brought the production to life.

A big thank you to all who contributed in making The Lion King the ‘roaring’ success that it was! For those who missed it, take a look at some imagery of the show below.
