Year 9 Students Visit Ypres, Belgium
Fifty Year 9 students from Harris Academy Merton recently travelled to Ypres, Belgium fascinating and thought-provoking day exploring the history of the First World War.
Trip Overview
The day began with a visit to the Passchendaele Memorial Museum, followed by a stop at Tyne Cot Cemetery, and concluded with a sweet treat at a local chocolate shop.

Passchendaele Memorial Museum
Students gained a deeper understanding of the challenging conditions faced by soldiers during the First World War. They explored a recreated trench and bunker system, gaining a vivid insight into the harsh conditions faced by soldiers on the Western Front.
An impressive artillery display helped them understand the technology and tactics of the era.
Tyne Cot Cemetery
As the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the world, Tyne Cot provided a powerful moment of remembrance. The students laid wreaths to honour those who lost their lives during the conflict.
Belgian Chocolate Shop
To finish the day, students sampled some of Belgium’s famous chocolates, adding a sweet note to their historical journey.
Highlight
The tour guides, both military veterans, praised the students for their excellent behaviour, respectful attitude, and active engagement. The students represented Harris Academy Merton exceptionally well, showing maturity, courtesy, and a genuine interest in learning about the history and experiences of those who served.
