Society & Relationships

At Harris Academy Merton, our FLICS programme (Faith, Lifestyle, Inclusion, Culture and Society) is a core part of our personal development curriculum. It helps students understand the world around them, develop respect for others, and build the knowledge and character needed to thrive in modern society.

Through weekly sessions, students explore important social, cultural and global themes, linking closely to our academy values and the wider curriculum.

What Students Learn

The FLICS programme is carefully designed to give students a broad and balanced understanding of society. Topics include:

  • Identity and belonging – understanding ourselves and our community
  • Equality and diversity – including Black History Month, Pride and inclusion
  • Relationships and wellbeing – such as anti-bullying, mental health and loneliness
  • Faith and culture – exploring key events such as Ramadan and Lent
  • Society and citizenship – including human rights, Remembrance Sunday and democracy
  • Digital literacy – misinformation, fake news and online safety
  • Financial education – budgeting, banking and the modern workplace

A Curriculum Connected to the Real World

Our FLICS programme is responsive and relevant, linking learning to real-world events and key national and international moments. Examples include:

  • International Women’s Day
  • Windrush Day
  • Holocaust Memorial Day
  • Remembrance Day

Students also engage with current affairs through carefully selected content, helping them to think critically about the world they live in.

Why FLICS is Important

FLICS supports students to:

  • Respect differences and celebrate diversity
  • Develop empathy and understanding of others
  • Think critically about social and global issues
  • Build confidence in discussing important topics
  • Become informed, responsible and active citizens

We want all students to leave Harris Academy Merton as thoughtful, informed and confident young people, ready to contribute positively to society. The FLICS programme plays a vital role in ensuring students are not only academically successful, but also socially aware, culturally informed and prepared for life in modern Britain.
