Harris Academy Merton WINS the World Maths Day Competition!
Harris Academy Greenwich hosted the World Maths Day Competition this year.
Along with the other Harris Academies, Harris Merton participated sending a team of enthusiastic students to the competition.
In preparation, students underwent training in problem and puzzle solving skills during lesson times to develop student confidence when working with numbers, thereby improving their fluency of different possible methodologies that could be applied.
Students have really engaged with these lessons and this has had a positive impact on the way they approach problem solving in general.
The competition consisted of 7 rounds, all of the focus was around maths and most of the rounds included challenging problem solving questions.
Round 1 - Algebra
Round 2 - Numeracy
Round 3- Logic
Round 4 - Spelling and definitions
Round 5 - Audible Spelling
Round 6- Mental Maths
Round 7 - Buzzer round
It was a closely contested competition going down to the wire; however it was Merton’s strong Mathematical skills and strategy that won them the competition.
You can see them hard at work in the pictures below, along with a sample question to show you just how tough it was!
To give you a little insight of their experience, the winners, whom we are all incredibly proud of, have also been snapped at different intervals of their remarkable day.
